The Dream Catcher Compassion Experience

We are committed to protecting and representing our youth. From experience, we know that writing can be a passport to anywhere they want to go in the world, literally and figuratively. It is the physical manifestation of the chaos that's inside our heads and hearts, and we want to provide as many opportunities as we can to change their worlds with it.
The goal of this workshop is to provide a creative, compassionate and reflective experience for underrepresented, vulnerable, teens in foster care, teen shelters, group homes or juvenile detention centers. We use writing, discussion, critical thinking, reflection and presentation as a strategy to teach youth how to effectively use their voice as their power.
This socially responsive opportunity uses dream catchers as a motif to put participants at the center of their dreams and help them strengthen their commitment to becoming critical thinkers who are open-minded, reflective, caring, balanced and principled. This workshop helps teens actualize the valuable career options that exist in writing and reveal the therapeutic effect that the act of writing can have. This practice will enable teens to work out his or her problems in writing instead of allowing them to choke them emotionally or mentally. The results:
Their dreams began to turn into reality. When the compassion experience is over, every participant will be left with four important, tangible "gifts:” a Dream Catcher to remind them, a compassionate experience to reflect upon, a writer's notebook to express within, and the inspiring encounter of uncommon bonds sharing common dreams.
