WRITING WEDNESDAY
BELL-TO-BELL CREATIVE WRITING
"There is no doubt being able to write formal essays is an important part of a teen's academic development. But, at #TeenWritersProject, we combine literary arts with education as a strategy to bridge imagination and communication and show how creative writing, for all its purposes, strengthens academic development." -delmetria millener, founder, #TeenWritersProject

In the classroom, our journal workbook gives new meaning to the Writing Wednesday experience in the classroom!

PEDAGOGY

Using our Teen Reflection Journal as a companion resource, we blend writing with Social Emotional Learning (SEL) for teens to balance their mental and emotional health at school. They are able to express themselves freely and creatively without criticism in our judgement-free zone!

Teens will explore classic and contemporary literature, film, music, and shared and personal experiences and observations to write about the social and cultural anthropology of the world around them, and be prepared for high-stakes exams!

They tell the stories they want to tell
--not the ones they'll be told.

WRITING

As students explore connecting writing and reading to real-life, they won't even realize that standards-based skills are applied as a power source to keep them thoroughly and thoughtfully engaged. These skills are paramount in the classroom but transferable to the professional world.

As they go through the journal, students will learn how to use writing, discussion, images, critical thinking, reflection and presentation as a tangible manifestation of the ideas that live inside their heads and hearts in order to change their worlds with it. It's the perfect way for students to learn how to effectively use their voices as their power.

PUBLICATION AND PUBLIC ART

At the end of the workshop, all students will have the opportunity to submit their most polished prose, poetry, artwork, and photography to The #TWP Quarterly Lit Zine for publishing consideration.

Before the end of each workshop, each student will write an impact statement that uncovers how they feel about the world in which they live. These statements will be included in our public art exhibition, Rough Drafts: Street Side Museum, an exhibit that is displayed in donated public spaces around the City of Dallas.

The phenomenology of this exhibit will create room for community engagement by allowing administrators, teachers, parents and the public to draw their own judgments and conclusions about how better to equip today's teens with strategies to revitalize their resilience.
