By Uzoamaka Onuora AI is changing the way we writers approach our craft. But, there’s a lingering fear that using AI will make my work feel less authentic. The good news is, when used strategically, AI can help your writing process without diminishing your creativity.
Here are some of the most effective ways to incorporate AI into your workflow while maintaining the heart and originality of your work: 1. Brainstorming Ideas Don’t let yourself get stuck staring at a blank page! AI can act as a brainstorming partner by providing prompts, exploring different angles on your topic, or helping you expand on ideas that you just can’t quite sync. If you put your original ideas into an AI program, you can uncover new perspectives you might not have considered—turning the dreaded brainstorming session into a dynamic, collaborative experience. 2. Editing Drafts Editing is where AI shines. There are AI tools out there that can catch grammar mistakes, improve sentence flow, and refine your language. That way, you can focus more on the substance and style of your writing, knowing that the technical details are covered. 3. Overcoming Writer’s Block AI can help you push through creative ruts by generating revised sentences or paragraphs based on your existing text that you give it. These suggestions can jumpstart your imagination, spark new ideas, and give you a foundation to build on while maintaining your unique voice and style. 4. Saving Time If you struggle with formatting, summarizing, or reorganizing content, AI can manage the mundane so you can focus on the magic of storytelling. Using AI to help with these tasks frees up your energy for what really matters: crafting meaningful narratives. 5. Academic Support I know that teachers don't really want us using AI, but my teacher is cool because she lets us use it for brainstorming and idea development. She has also let us use AI to write an essay before. Afterward, she had us annotate to identify literary techniques and elements, academic language, rhetoric, and other devices. We also have to do research and cite information that we find that we did not research, which maintains our integrity, authenticity, and helps with overcoming writer's block and refining our drafts. As you can see, the key to using AI effectively is intention. Think of it as a tool to elevate your work, not replace your artistry. By letting AI handle some of the mechanics, you can dedicate yourself fully to the creative process. Your writing will still remain personal, impactful, and undeniably yours.
