By Uzoamaka Onuorah ![]() In the wake of this recent election, and in the loom of the future induction, a lot of things feel both final and up in the air for many citizens. A lot of emotions were running through our minds after the election: shock, disappointment, fear, confusion, anger. It left us all in a worrisome state, where if you weren’t privileged, you felt helpless and like the only thing left to do was accept our doomed fate in this country. But, in the coming years it’s so important to remember that whatever happens, they cannot hold us down or keep us back. There is still a way to resist: by writing. Writers have always had a large role in politics, from the Federalist Papers to 1984, where they provide an insight into the current state of politics and their feelings on it. Now, the writer’s role is shifting. In a world where you are attacked for being “too political” or “too radical,” writing is needed to make the comfortable uncomfortable. It’s a writer’s job to take the jumble of talking points and turn it into a pointed combination of words to express how we all feel. Writing is needed to make ourselves heard, no matter what they do to quiet us. Writers provide the space for marginalized voices to be heard, and that’s something we are going to need a lot in the coming years. We may be feeling targeted and unsafe in this country’s current environment, but we can create a safe space for ourselves and others through our writing as the current and upcoming generation of teen writers. Write for the trans teenager that fears using the restroom because there is no one else like them inside it. Write for the first gen teen wondering what will happen to the family they hold so dear. Write for the girl who is considered mature enough to have a child but not mature enough to learn how to prevent it from happening. Just having it exist can be a comfort to those who need it and a threat to those trying to suppress it. This has been the role of writers in politics in the past, it is our role as writers now in these current times, and it will continue to be so long as there is equality and justice to fight for. Keep writing, because it is so very needed.

The Write WayBlogging helps teens investigate the human condition from various perspectives. "Blogging is to writing what Extreme Sports is to athletes: more free-form, more accident-prone, less formal, more alive. It is, in many ways, writing out loud!" -Andrew Sullivan
